The Pentagon’s official warfare manual, written by General Petraeus, indicates that to have any hope of a victory against a counter-insurgency in a country the size of Afghanistan with a population of 34 million, between 500,000 to 700,000 combat and support troops must be committed over a long period. However, the Petraeus numbers can’t be met under any current scenario.

While Obama agonizes over how to choose among only bad options in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Daniel Elsberg reports that Pentagon insiders, who understand that the Afghan war cannot be won militarily, nonetheless have told Obama he must approve McChrystal's troop escalation plan. If he doesn’t they threaten that top generals will resign their posts and launch a public attack accusing the President of abandoning a "winnable" war and being "soft on terrorism."

The Elsberg claim is reinforced by Seymour Hersh. He says a powerful faction in the Pentagon has launched “a war against the White House” over troop commitments and overall strategy. Hersh reports many hawkish military leaders think Obama is "weak and the wrong color.” He adds: “We may not like to think that, but it's true."

If Elsberg and Hersh are right, it would seem that the Pentagon wants another endless war and may be willing to blackmail their Commander-In-Chief to get their way. That used to be called treason.

It appears as if Obama won't completely capitulate, but won't face the war hawks down either.

Jerry Silverman is brilliant, as usual. Unfortunately, we cannot often get this kind of broad, long-ranged, realistic analysis at the Department of State or the Department of Defense.

Very good piece, but there is no answer-Fox News will have a wonderful time with the decision to get out. Politically this issue has to be kept on the back burner for the sake of the socialist agenda-Why can't we turn to the Arab world and tell them if they don't get the price of oil down to $50 we are getting out-let them fight this war-they might even make an alliance with Israel-no negotiations, they would take 5 years. Going town to town handing out candy with 100 pounds of equipment on the back of soldier is not going to work. Please tell me the last time the military was right-they have postitioned themselves ,along with Dick Cheney -the blame sits with them -cut the military budget in half and we would not have these problems-Kevin
